When is it time to write the NEXT book?

If you’ve published already – you know the feeling:
The thrill of creation, of completion, of accomplishment…
It’s a virtual birthing (marginally less painful, but no less emotional).

Then you’ll also know that not long after, very soon after, quite quickly after, you want to do it all again…

But of course there is hesitation…

I mean, now you KNOW what you are walking into…

  • The OBSESSION you are inviting into your life…
  • The days, nights, social engagements and sleep you will give up.
  • The books you won’t read, the movies you won’t watch,
  • The exercise you won’t do, the dinners you won’t host.

For months you will be caught in a mire of words and synonyms, of sentence structure and research…

For months you will be lost to the world, to your family, to your LIFE.
Are you REALLY ready to go through all that again?

Of COURSE you are!

This will be my 4th book (8th if I count my erotic fiction under a pen name)
And just weeks after my last one hit the virtual shelves I was CHOMPING at the bit to get started…
I had my idea all lined up.
I outlined…

Mind mapped…

And then…

I stalled.
It felt… stale…
Forced.
I put it aside (always the best policy when it’s not flowing)
I waited.

…..

Well-meaning people asked me how my next book was coming along.
I sidestepped their questions, emitting vague non-committal grunts in response.
I tapped out a few pages here and there, but the passion-factor was low.

Then one day, a few months later, driving to meet up with a friend… it HIT me.

(I almost swerved off the road).
Not THAT idea – not the strategic, LOGICAL next idea I had planned out…
NO!
Something else…
A departure, but SO obvious
I was stunned, shocked that I hadn’t thought of it before…
YES!

This was it: game on!

The thrill of the chase was visceral.
  • – No hesitation now…
  • – No stale, forced typing…
  • – No blank page, curser-blinking cursing…
  • – No wondering, questioning…
Of course the words flowed out of me onto the page.
Of course I wrote the entire thing in a few weeks.

Of course if felt right and natural and so so easy.

It’s not ALWAYS like this, but if we follow flow, if we LET our heart speak to us, and through us, to lead us…

It is.
